Costa del Sol hotels set for winter closure
Winter closure for Costa del Sol hotels
The Costa del Sol Hoteliers Association believes that a third of Costa del Sol hotels will close over the winter season to reduce costs during the quieter period. Although some hotels in the region have closed for the winter season in previous years more are considering a closure in 2009.
Historically hotels in the Costa del Sol have ran on reduced occupancy between November and March as visitor numbers take a sharp decline from the busy summer period, with revenue generated during the summer ensuring the hotels can run during the quiet season, even on reduced income.
However following a reduction of visitor numbers during the summer of 2009 some hotels see the winter season as a chance to reduce costs. However the news could mean that some hotel workers are laid off and the CCOO union has raised this concern claiming that temporary closures could lead to some hotels failing to reopen in 2010.
As holidaymakers look to reduce the cost of their holiday many are opting for self-catering accommodation such as holiday villas and apartments on the Costa del Sol.
