ATM machines in Spain free for Abbey customers
Free Cash Points in Spain could save holidaymakers millions
Customers of Abbey, Alliance & Leicester and Bradford & Bingley will soon be able to access their cash via Spanish ATM machines without being charged any extra fees.
The banks which are now part of the Spanish bank Santander will allow customers with £1000 or more in their bank account to withdraw freely from the 11th of January.
The 11th of January will also be the day when the group’s banks across the UK begin to be re-branded as Santander in an attempt to strengthen the Santander brand and offer a single name to customers across Europe.
The free service could help to save Costa del Sol holidaymakers money during their stay in Spain with Santander claiming that a UK customer who withdraws €130 on three occasions from a Spanish ATM will be £15.51 better off.
Santander also stated that 22% of the cash withdrawals during made from Abbey accounts at overseas ATMs during 2009 occurred in Spain. It predicts that if all of its customers who visit Spain next year use a Santander ATM, they could collectively save as much as £2m.
